Effects of cocaine on heart rate variability in healthy subjects.

Author information

  • 1Department of Internal Medicine, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, USA.

In this study, we found that cocaine decreased the high-frequency power of heart rate variability in normal volunteers, implicating a decrease in vagal tone. However, the results of our autonomic blocking studies indicated the opposite, suggesting a major influence of cardiac sympathetic drive on the high-frequency power of heart rate variability.
