    Abstract

Genetic studies in rheumatology have led us down a path with two practical endpoints. On the one hand, sophisticated molecular genetics provides specific markers with which to predict disease risk. On the other hand, these same studies have identified likely genetic and molecular intermediates in the pathway of disease, offering new possibilities for targeted intervention and immunotherapy.
