Abstract

PIP: In Thailand, the Center for Women's Rights Protection of the Friends of Women Foundation operates a Women's Club for women experiencing domestic problems. In a little over a year of existence, the club has attracted 94 members, including six men. Women from all walks of life join the club to share their experiences and provide support to other women. The volunteers attend counseling programs to learn how to broach difficult subjects. More than 90% of the women who seek counseling have felt so desperate that they have entertained thoughts of murdering their husbands. The Women's Club lets them know that they are not alone in their trouble and that they have other, less drastic, solutions. The volunteers who work with the women's club, some of whom have experienced domestic problems first-hand, find their work self-affirming.
