Abstract

The antimicrobial properties of airways secretions and other mucosal secretions have been known for more than 70 years. Recent studies have identified a number of antimicrobial peptides and proteins that contribute to the antimicrobial activity of secretions, both under basal and inflamed conditions. Several peptides have properties that make them suitable for pharmaceutical development as topical or systemic antimicrobial agents.
