Prostate cancer has become the most common cancer in men in the United States. The increasing prevalence of prostate cancer can be attributed to a number of causes, including relatively new detection modalities, the increasing life span of American men, and increased public awareness of the disease. The increased awareness has resulted from information in the lay press, recognition of prominent public figures who are living with or have died from prostate cancer, and an increasingly informed American public.
