The gray short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) is the predominant laboratory-bred marsupial that is used in research of molecular evolution, development, photo-biology and DNA repair, and neurobiology. It is becoming an increasingly important model organism for comparative genomic research.

Just In...
New Genome Assembly!: NCBI's annotation of the gray short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) genome, Mdm2.1, is now available in Map Viewer! You can browse the genome, search based on gene symbols or names, or BLAST against the genome assembly. The annotation is on the 2006 opossum 6.5X assembly, MonDom5, generated by the Broad Institute. The assembly sequence are available in GenBank, EMBL, and DDBJ, and by BLAST.
New publication!: The Monodelphis domestica genome with descriptions of the sequence, assembly, annotation and analysis is now available in the journal Nature.

ANNOUNCING the release of the opossum genome assembly (NCBI build 2.1, based on MonDom5) in Map Viewer. Take a moment to BLAST your favorite gene sequence against the genome and explore the maps available for viewing. Learn more about the Gnomon gene prediction program and the resulting models available in Map Viewer.
