P. yoelii has been isolated from the blood of shiny thicket rats from the Central African Republic, from Brazzaville and from Western Nigeria. Three subspecies are recognized, P. yoelii yoelii, P. yoelii killicki and P. yoelii nigeriensis. The parasite is readily grown in laboratory mice and rats, where it shows a preference for immature red blood cells . Infections are asynchronous with a periodicity of 22-25 hours. Like P. berghei, the parasite may be transmitted in the laboratory by Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes. o The P. yoelii genome P. yoelii has 14 chromosomes visualized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Genome size is estimated to be close to that of P. falciparum at 25-30 Mb. o TIGR/NMRC P. yoelii Genome Database TIGR and the Malaria Program at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) are collaborating on a research program to provide low coverage sequencing of the P. yoelii genome (http://www.tigr.org/tdb/e2k1/pya1/). This site provides access to the complete set of annotated contigs that make up the P. y. yoelii 5X genome sequence, as well as to unnannotated sequence data Last updated: Nov 06, 2002 |
