For Prospective Authors
GeneReviews authors are international experts on the diseases reviewed.
GeneReviews is supported by
the National Institutes of Health and is offered to users
at no cost. Authors do not receive honoraria.
GeneReviews entries:
- Are viewed by ~5000 readers daily.
- Provide additional visibility for authors through
links to their Web sites, publications, and
laboratories.
- Serve as an accessible resource on the disorder to
which authors can refer non-experts.
Authors serve a "term of authorship" (2-3 years) in
which:
- Authors write the first draft of the entry using the
GeneReviews template
and author
guidelines. GeneReviews
focuses on the use of molecular genetic testing in
patient diagnosis, management, and genetic counseling.
GeneReviews relies upon the
GeneTests Laboratory Directory for determination of
currently available testing.
- The entry is internally reviewed by editorial staff
experts in clinical genetics, laboratory genetics, and
genetic counseling and externally peer reviewed by
internationally acknowledged subject experts.
- Staff assist authors by identifying related consumer
health-oriented resources and linking to relevant genomic
databases.
- Authors provide additional revisions to keep the
entry current.
At the end of the two- to three-year term of authorship,
authors are invited to renew their commitment. If authors
choose, they may update the entry and extend authorship for
another term.
