For Authors
Initial submission
- Carla Gifford, Procurement Coordinator, contacts the
author regarding the title of the entry and timelines for
submission.
- Authors are asked to complete and return:
- Authors are sent via email a customized template for
either:
- Authors complete their entry following author
guidelines for either:
- Authors submit completed templates to:

- Where applicable, authors:
- Obtain permission to use copyrighted material
(e.g., diagrams, photographs, illustrations, tables)
and discuss with GeneReviews staff any incidental
fees
- Fax signed consent forms for "recognizable"
photos to GeneTests at 206-221-4679
Editorial process
- The submitted draft is reviewed and edited by
GeneReviews staff for
accuracy/completeness of information on laboratory
testing, clinical findings, and genetic counseling, and
returned to the author for approval/revision.
- The draft is then peer reviewed by at least two
subject experts and returned to the author for final
approval/revision before posting.
Terms of authorship
- Authors serve a two- to three-year "term" during
which time they provide revisions
whenever clinically relevant changes occur, e.g., in test
availability (research vs clinical), test methodology, or
treatment.
- When a GeneReview is ready
for formal updating (every 2-3 years), authors are given
the opportunity to renew their term of authorship.
Responsibilities include:
- Working with editorial staff to create a formal
update
of the entry.
- Providing revisions as needed to keep the entry
current.
- Authors who choose not to renew their term of
authorship or do not respond to the invitation to renew
their commitment will be listed (with affiliation and
dates of authorship) in an Author History section under
Chapter Notes in the GeneReview entry.
