Patient risk stratification by age at diagnosis and race. Patients were categorized into three risk groups on the basis of clinical stage, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level, and Gleason score as previously described (). Low risk = stage T2a or lower, PSA level ≤10 ng/mL, and a Gleason score ≤ 6; intermediate risk = stage T2b or Gleason score 7 or a PSA level >10 and ≤20 ng/mL; and high risk = stage T2c or higher or PSA level >20 ng/mL or Gleason score ≥8. All categories do not total 100% because of rounding.
