Figure 1. Solving for Evolutionary Principles Independent of Chronologic Time. From: Exploiting Cellular-Developmental Evolution as the Scientific Basis for Preventive Medicine.

By regressing Gene Regulatory Networks(GRNs) mediating cell-cell interactions relevant to structure/function across ontogeny and phylogeny against chronologic time and phenotype, we can generate a family of parallel lines, or simultaneous equations. Using this approach, we can ‘solve’ for the underlying evolutionary principles involved independently of chronologic time, making the biologic processes self-referential.

At the top (A) is the cellular mechanism of alveolar development. In the middle (B) is an epigenetic paracrine cellular mechanism for alveolar evolution, showing how oxygen and stretch may have ‘driven’ a series of cellular interactions for lung evolution from the advent of the lipofibroblast to leptin production, causing increased surfactant, which allowed for the decreased alveolar diameter, increasing the surface-to-volume ratio and increased gas exchange. At the bottom (C) is a descriptive genetic pathway for the same process shown.
