D.melanogaster
The structural gene for glutathione-dependent formaldehyde dehydrogenase (FDH), previously characterized as octanol dehydrogenase, a multimer of 109,000 molecular weight (Sieber, Fox and Ursprung, 1972); evidence for tetrameric structure in other Drosophila species (Pipkin, 1969); immunologically unrelated to ADH (Courtright, 1968). Preferred substrates are long-chain primary alcohols, with lesser activity on short-chain and branched-chain primary alcohols; inactive on secondary alcohols (Bremner et al., 1971).
