The chicken (
Gallus gallus) is an important model organism for biomedical research, development, and aging, in addition to being important agriculturally. The chicken has served as a model organism in many areas of biomedical research; it is one of the primary models for embryology and development, the study of viruses, and cancer. The chicken
More...genome is less than half the size of that of mouse or human, and consists of 38 autosomes and two sex chromosomes, referred to as Z and W. Unlike mammals, male birds are homozygous (ZZ) while females are heterozygous (ZW). Chicken chromosomes, like other avian species, exhibit a much greater variation in size ranging from 200 Mb to 5 Mb; the smaller chromosomes are termed "microchromosomes". Less...
Gallus gallus Gallus_gallus-4.0A team at the Genome Sequencing Center at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis led by Richard Wilson, Ph.D., assembled the genome of the Red Jungle Fowl, the ancestor of domestic chickens. This is the first avian genome to be sequenced.
A de novo assembly was submitted by the International Chicken Genome Sequencing Consortium to correct gaps and duplications in build 2.1. Sequencing of the same individual used in the previous assemblies was to 12-fold coverage with the 454 platform and assembly produced by combining new reads with all previous Sanger reads. |
