Capsaspora owczarzaki

An amoeboid symbiont of a pulmonate snail

Lineage: Eukaryota[1343]; Ichthyosporea[1]; Capsaspora[1]; Capsaspora owczarzaki[1]
Capsaspora owczarzaki. This unicellular eukaryotic snail symbiont was isolated from the haemolymph of Biomphalaria glabrata. It was described with a novel genus and species based on rRNA sequence phylogeny, life history, and morphological differences. Distinguishing characters are the presence of life cycle stages occuring within the snail haemolymph; the ability to kill and ingest digenetic trematode larvae; the ability to undergo asexual fission to produce daughter cells; an absence of flagella, a mucous sheath and membranes containing chitin, elastin, or collagen; and the presence of long unbranching pseudopodia and a penetration process. It serves as the intermediate host for Schistosoma sp., a digenean platyhelminth that is the causative agent of schistosomiasis.
