The red flour beetle genome was sequenced and assembled by the Baylor College of Medicine with funding from the National Human Genome Research Institute. The red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) is a sophisticated model organism for higher eukaryotes and is a member of the largest and most diverse eukaryotic order, the Coleoptera. The red flour beetle has a voracious appetite for stored cereals and nuts, annually causing millions of dollars in damage. Studying the red flour beetle may yield insights into the genetic innovations that accompanied the evolution of higher forms with more complex development and facilitate the discovery of new pharmaceuticals and antibiotics.

Of Recent Note...

The genome of the model beetle and pest Tribolium castaneum has been published in Nature, and is available online.

March 2008: Map Viewer is now displaying an updated build based on the Tcas_3.0 assembly from Baylor College of Medicine.

Special issues on the Tribolium genome have been published in Development Genes and Evolution and Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
