   Recombination during meiosis

(a) Crossing over occurs between chromatids of homologous chromosomes aligned in parallel (synapsis) during metaphase preceding the first meiotic division. (b) The longer the distance between two genes on a chromatid, the more likely they are to be separated by crossing over.
