Suppression of cell survival by PTEN

The tumor suppressor protein PTEN is a lipid phosphatase that dephosphorylates PIP3 at the 3 position of inositol, yielding PIP2. PTEN thus counters the action of the oncogenes PI 3-kinase and Akt, which promote cell survival.
