Suppression of cell survival by PTEN

The tumor suppressor protein PTEN is a lipid phosphatase that dephosphorylates PIP₃ at the 3 position of inositol, yielding PIP₂. PTEN thus counters the action of the oncogenes PI 3-kinase and Akt, which promote cell survival.
