   Comparison of meiosis and mitosis

Both meiosis and mitosis initiate after DNA replication, so each chromosome consists of two sister chromatids. In meiosis I, homologous chromosomes pair and then segregate to different cells. Sister chromatids then separate during meiosis II, which resembles a normal mitosis. Meiosis thus gives rise to four haploid daughter cells.
