   Metabolism in the matrix of mitochondria

Pyruvate and fatty acids are imported from the cytosol and converted to acetyl CoA in the mitochondrial matrix. Acetyl CoA is then oxidized to CO₂ via the citric acid cycle, the central pathway of oxidative metabolism.
