Figure 12.63Organization of protocadherin gene clusters

The human protocadherin genes are organized into three clusters. In the cluster illustrated, 15 different variable regions encoding extracellular and transmembrane domains are linked to a single constant region, consisting of three exons encoding the cytoplasmic domain. Protocadherin mRNAs contain one of the variable region exons linked to the constant region.
