A polypeptide chain is generated by a series of condensation reactions, in vivo normally occurring within the ribosome during protein synthesis. The individual amino acids are shown in their zwitterionic form, in which the amino and carboxylic acid groups are oppositely charged. This is the most abundant form at neutral pH.
