Transfection of blastema cells with shh (C,D) or bmp2b (E,F) causes ray fusions due to ectopic bone matrix deposition (white arrows on C-F) in between the sister rays. Cryosection of the lepidotrichia at the level of the fusion (right panel) shows that ectopic bone deposition is restricted to the epithelial-mesechymal interface, and no bone forms in the inner ray mesenchyme (*).
