Demonstration of requirement for hyaluronan for EMT. Panel A shows a normal chick heart explant with a large outgrowth of activated endothelial cells and invaded mesenchyme. Panel B is an equivalent chick explant grown in the presence of streptomyces hyaluronidase to remove hyaluronan. Panel C shows an equivalently staged mouse heart atrioventricular canal explant (E9.5) from a Has2-/- animal. Outgrowth and EMT is inhibited by both genetic and enzymatic loss of hyaluronan.
