Schematic representation of the known Rab GTPase functions. Rabs operate as molecular switches in at least two different scenarios: tethering membrane transport vesicles to molecular motors (top) or effector molecules (bottom) that mediate the assembly of membrane fusion machinery. Both scenarios may be interchangeable depending on the availability of binding partners (local concentration, [ en], and binding affinity constant, Kd).
