The late larval cuticle from a wild type larva is patterned by the segmentation process and contains a series of denticle belts characteristic for each segment (a1 to a8) A) In embryos mutant for the stat92E transcription factor (B), the fourth and fifth abdominal segments are lost (or fused) and the eighth is reduced. In addition the head skeleton (hs) and the posterior spiracles (ps) are also disrupted and reduced. Embryos mutant for both stat92E and other pathway components, including upd, dome and hop, show somewhat variable, but fundamentally similar phenotypes.
