This figure shows the composition of postdoctorates in academic institutes by their citizenship. In 1979 about 1,900 postdoctorates were temporary residents and about 4,900 were U.S. citizens or permanent residents. In the mid-1990s the number were about equal at about 7,000, but in 2008 the number of foreign postdoctorates is about 11,200 and U.S. citizens and permanent residents is about 8,500.
