Variable

A measurable attribute that varies over time or between individuals. Variables can be

  • Discrete: taking values from a finite set of possible values (e.g. race or ethnicity)
  • Ordinal: taking values from a finite set of possible values where the values indicate rank (e.g. 5-point Likert scale)
  • Continuous: taking values on a continuum (e.g. hemoglobin A1c values).
