Low concentrations of VIP induce gene expression of the α1C subunit of Cav1.2 (L-type) calcium channels to enhance motility function. (A and B) Incubation of primary cultures of human colonic circular smooth muscle cells with VIP enhanced mRNA and protein expression of the α1C subunit of Cav1.2 (L-type) calcium channels. (C) KCl-induced calcium influx was greater in colonic smooth muscle cells incubated with VIP for 24 hours, as compared with that in those incubated with control medium. (D) The incubation of human colonic circular smooth muscle strips with VIP enhanced their reactivity to ACh.
