The core of tissue taken from the liver shows the replacement of normal liver with multiple areas of dark cells of carcinoid tissue.

Two radionucleotide scans have been performed. The left-hand panel shows a 99mTc-labelled colloid scan demonstrating patchy uptake of colloid into normal liver cells. The right hand scan shows the uptake of 111In-octreotide. Note that each is the reciprocal of the other; areas that take up most octreotide take up no colloid demonstrating the areas of carcinoid metastastic replacement of liver.
