Confocal laser scanning fluorescence micrographs showing increased ALA-induced PpIX levels with cellular differentiation. Human prostate cancer cell line LNCaP were exposed to 0.3 mM ALA for 4 hours. The red fluorescence stems from PpIX synthesized within the cells. The cells on the left were grown in androgen-free medium. The cells on the right were pretreated for 4 days with the synthetic androgen receptor ligand R1881, which acts as a differentiating agent.
