Hyperlinks to individual GeneReviews can be constructed using data in a downloadable file, GRtitle_shortname_NBKid.txt.
To Construct URLs
The data file GRtitle_shortname_NBKid.txt includes three tab-delimited fields: GR_shortname, GR_title, and NBK_id. Links to GeneReviews can be constructed using the values for either GR_shortname or NBK_id.
For example, either of the following URLs will go to the GeneReview Early-Onset Familial Alzheimer Disease:
To Determine the Availability of a GeneReview
The availability of a GeneReview can be determined based on associated values (gene or OMIM number) in one of two data files:
Gene symbol. Use the data in NBKid_shortname_genesymbol.txt to determine, based on gene symbol, whether a GeneReview exists. Note: If a GeneReview is associated with (e.g.) five genes, the GeneReview will have five rows in the data file, one for each gene symbol.
OMIM number. Use the data in NBKid_shortname_OMIM.txt to determine, based on OMIM number, whether a GeneReview exists. Note: If a GeneReview is associated with (e.g.) two entries in OMIM, the GeneReview will have two rows in the data file, one for each associated OMIM number.
To Access the Data Files
Go to ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/pub/GeneReviews/
Open the appropriate data file:
To determine if a GeneReview exists based on the gene(s) associated with it: NBKid_shortname_genesymbol.txt
To determine if a GeneReview exists based on the OMIM number(s) associated with it: NBKid_shortname_OMIM.txt
To find values for constructing hyperlinks to GeneReviews: GRtitle_shortname_NBKid.txt
To Download a Data File
Import the data file into Excel:
Save the file to your desktop as a text file.
In Excel select Data – From Text.
Select the text file.
Click through the Excel Text Import Wizard. Note: Data fields are tab delimited.
Click OK; save the Excel file.
Note: The GeneReviews data files are updated weekly.
