Downloading/Installing Cn3D on Macintosh

Cn3D now works with both PowerMac and 68K Macintosh platforms

The latest version of Cn3D may be downloaded with your WWW-browser or via anonymous ftp from the NCBI file server. Cn3D for the Macintosh is supplied as a Compact Pro (TM) self-extracting archive.

Downloading via the Web

You can download cn3d now, using your WWW-browser, or see the FTP instructions below. Double click on the "cn3d.sea" application once you have received it. This will self-extract the Cn3D folder (some web browsers will perform this task automatically). Now return to the installation page

Memory Requirements

It is recommended that you increase the amount of memory available for Cn3D. To do this, select the Cn3D application and go to "Get Info" in the Finder's File menu. Increase the preferred and minimum sizes by at least a factor of 2 (or more if your mac has more memory). When assigning memory sizes to Cn3D, you should also consider the memory requirements of any other applications that will need to be run alongside Cn3d (e.g. your WWW-browser).

FTP Downloading Instructions

  • Remove any old files from your hard disk. For example, remove any old Cn3d application, or "data" folder.
  • Launch HyperFTP.
  • Connect to "ncbi.nlm.nih.gov".
  • Enter "anonymous" as the user name.
  • Enter your Internet e-mail address as the password.
  • Set the BinHex file Transfer Mode.
  • Receive the "cn3d.hqx" file, saving as "cn3d.sea".
  • Disconnect from the NCBI file server.
  • Quit HyperFTP.
  • Double click on the "cn3d.sea" application. This will self-extract the "Cn3D" folder.
