NCBI applications can work as a standalone clients, able to retrieve information directly from NCBI databases over the network. To do this, they must be set up to use the network and any intervening security firewalls. To do this, first run your NCBI application and select the Option menu. Under the Option menu, select Net Configure... This will bring up a dialog. If you are normally connected to the Internet and are not behind a firewall, select "Normal", click "Accept" and rerun your application -- you are now done. If you are behind a security firewall and your firewall is not transparent , select "Firewall". A good way to check to see if you are behind a firewall and get the names and ports of your firewall servers is to check your web browser (if you are unable to do this, contact your network administrator for help):
Now that you have the names and ports of your firewall servers, enter the name and port of the http firewall server into the Proxy Host and Proxy Port text boxes. If there is no port number, leave the Proxy Port text box blank. For the Fireall Proxy text box, enter the http firewall server name unless told otherwise by your network administrator or your browser used a different firewall server for protocols other than http (in this case, try the names of the servers for the different protocols). Click on Accept and restart the program to check to see if the settings work. Firewall WarningIf you are unable to get the application working by yourself, it is likely because of a firewall configuration problem as NCBI applications use ports different than common network protocols. Please contact your network administrator for more information. As a last resort, it may be possible to work around the firewall, with the cooperation of your local network managers. Please contact NCBI at info@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov to discuss the matter.
