Similarity with other Taxa

Tectiviruses have similarities to corticoviruses. They both have an icosahedral capsid enclosing a membrane. However, the capsid and genome organizations differ considerably. PRD1, and presumably other tectiviruses, have many features in common with adenoviruses. These include:

  • a linear genome,
  • genomic inverted terminal repeats,
  • protein-primed initiation of replication,
  • type B (E. coli Pol 11) DNA polymerase,
  • trimeric capsid proteins that contains two beta barrels and form hexagonal structures,
  • arrangement of the capsid protein in a pseudo T=25 lattice, and
  • receptor-binding spikes at capsid vertices.

  • This principal capsid architecture and CP fold have also been described in an isolate of Paramecium bursaria Chlorella virus 1, belonging to the family Phycodnaviridae.

    Derivation of Names

    Tecti from Latin tectus "covered".
