Similarity with other Taxa

Rudiviridae and Lipothrixviridae families have members with filamentous viruses containing linear dsDNA genomes that infect extremely thermophilic Archaea in the kingdom Crenarchaeota. However, the members of the family Rudiviridae are not enveloped, whereas those of the family Lipothrixviridae are enveloped. There is a large amount of genome conservation between members of the families Lipothrixviridae and Rudiviridae. Approximately 30% of the ORFs in the SIRV genome have homologues in the SIFV genome.

The mode of replication and topology of the genomes of the members of the family Rudiviridae are similar to those of poxviruses, African swine fever virus and Chlorella viruses.

Derivation of Names

Rudi: from the Latin 'rudis', 'small rod'.
