Classification

This is a description of a vertebrate virus at the genus level.

ICTVdB Virus Code: 00.005.0.01. Virus accession number: 005001GE. Obsolete virus code: 05.0.1.; superceded accession number: 05010000.
NCBI Taxon Identifier NCBI Taxonomy ID: 249588.

Name, Synonyms and Lineage

The taxon has the accepted ICTV name.

Synonym(s): Astrovirus. Virus is of the family 00.005. Astroviridae.

Virion Properties

Morphology

Virions consist of a capsid. Virus capsid is not enveloped, round with polyhedral symmetry. The isometric capsid has a diameter of 27-30 nm. Capsids appear round. The capsid surface structure reveals a regular pattern with distinctive features (star-like with six points). The capsomer arrangement is clearly visible. Surface projections are small, surface appears rough, spikes protruding from the 12 vertices.

Capsids can be penetrated by stain and some appear dark in the center.

Physicochemical and Physical Properties

Virions have a buoyant density in CsCl of 1.36-1.39 g cm-3.

Nucleic Acid

The genome is not segmented and contains a single molecule of linear, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA. The complete genome is about 6800-7900 nucleotides long. The genome has a guanine + cytosine content of 45 %. The 3'-terminus has a poly (A) tract. Each virion contains a longer than full length copy.

GenBank records for nucleotide sequences; complete genome sequences.

Proteins

The viral genome encodes structural proteins.

Lipids

Lipids are absent.

Biological Properties

Natural Host

Virus infects during its life cycle a single type of vertebrate host.

Taxonomic Proposals and Changes

A taxonomic proposal has been submitted to the ICTV by the Vertebrate Virus Subcommittee, Study Group for Astroviridae at the meeting in Washington, DC, April 2001 to split the taxon (Astrovirus into Mamastrovirus and Aviastrovirus). The proposal has been approved at the meeting of the Executive Committee in Paris, 2002.
