by Michael Y. Galperin, Roger Higdon, and Eugene Kolker, published in in Mol. BioSyst. 2010, 6: 721-728. Abstract. Article outline.
It was a part of the Sentra database project (see the Abstract of the 2007 NAR database paper), which is no longer maintained
at the Argonne National Lab. You are welcome to cite either of these publications.

A previous version of this census, covering genomes of 167 species, was created as a web supplement to the paper "A census
of membrane-bound and intracellular signal transduction proteins in bacteria: Bacterial IQ, extroverts and introverts
"
by M.Y. Galperin, published in BMC Microbiology 2005, 5:35. Abstract. Full text (PDF). In 2007, it was expanded to 330 genomes.
A new version, covering all genomes of 698 bacterial and archaeal species sequenced by the end of 2009, is currently in preparation.
