Creating Combinatorial Libraries: Functional analogs of sarin

Launch guide window Launch NCBI Home Page

Goals

  • Find the PubChem Compound summary page for sarin
  • Learn about the functional properties of sarin
  • Retrieve other compounds with the same function as sarin
  • Save the compounds in a single combinatorial library file

Steps

  1. Retrieve the PubChem Compound Summary page for sarin
    • On the NCBI home page, enter sarin in the search box and click Go.
    • Find the PubChem Compound results and click on the number of hits, and then on the CID (Compound IDentifier) for the first record retrieved.

  2. Find functional properties of sarin
    • According to the Medical Subject Annotations section, what is sarin (unfortunately) used for and what is its mode of action?
    • Under Pharmacological Action, click on the functional class for this compound (hint: not the one about chemical warfare).

  3. Find functional analogs of sarin
    • Click on the second record (contains [Pharmacological Action]) to see a list of the names of some compounds in this class.
    • Click PubChem Compound with MeSH in the Links menu to access a more comprehensive listing of compounds with the same pharmacological function as sarin.

  4. Create and save the sarin combinatorial library
    • Choose PubChem Download from the Display menu.
    • Choose your preferred format, then click Download.
