   Finding compounds by pharmacological action: Lipoxygenase inhibitors

Goals

  • Find all lipophilic lipoxygenase inhibitors (XlogP > 0)
  • Rank these compounds by increasing molecular weight

Steps

  1. Open Preview/Index in PubChem Compound
    • On the NCBI home page, choose PubChem Compound from the Database menu.
    • Click Go, leaving the search box blank.
    • Click the Preview/Index tab.

  2. Limit by Pharmacological Action
    • In the All Fields menu, choose PharmAction.
    • In the text box to the right, type lipoxygenase.
    • Click the Index button.
    • Click lipoxygenase inhibitors from the list, and then the AND button.

  3. Limit the set by XlogP
    • Click the Limits tab to the left of Preview/Index.
    • In the XlogP From/To boxes, enter 0 and 20 respectively.
    • Click Go.
    • Click the Details tab to see how Entrez accomplished the XlogP limit. Look under User Query to see what you could have typed.

  4. Sort the compounds by increasing molecular weight
    • In the Sort by menu, choose MW(up).
