NCBI Mini-Course:
Making Sense of DNA and Protein Sequences
The Protein Analysis module for the August 2-6, 2004 NAWBIS course is based
on the NCBI Mini-Course, "Making Sense of DNA and Protein Sequences",
by Medha Bhagwat and David Wheeler. Please open that site and we will use it
for the remainder of the module.
- The first topic covered in the mini-course involves finding a gene within a
eukaryotic DNA sequence. It complements the suite of DNA Analysis tools covered
earlier in the day and transitions into the primary topic of this module:
protein analysis.
- Within protein analysis, we will predict the function of the implied protein
product by seeking sequence similarities to proteins of documented function
using BLAST and other tools. Finally, we will find a 3D modeling template for
this protein sequence using a Conserved Domain Database Search.
The remainder of slides in this module reflect an earlier version of the
module that was developed by Nicola Gaedeke for presentation in previous years.
Although will not be able to cover those slides in the time allotted for this
module, we have left them in the module for your reference. They contain links
to additional resources that you might find useful.
