Introduction to Phylogenetics

  • The science of "Systematics" is the study and organization of biological diversity.
  • "Phylogenetics" is the study or estimation of the evolutionary history that underlies that biological diversity.
  • "Taxonomy" is the classification of organisms, groups and genes according to their evolutionary histories and/or similarities.
  • Both extinct and extant organisms are the objects of study.
  • This organization is visually described through "trees".
