What microbial genome sequencing projects have been completed, and which are in progress?

Lists of completed and in-progress genome projects can be helpful, for example, to labs that plan to undertake new microbial genome sequencing projects or to contact labs conducting ongoing projects.

While the Entrez Genome database contains sequence and map data from completed and some in-progress genomes, a companion Entrez Genome Project database provides an umbrella view of the status of a wide range of genome projects, both completed and in-progress. The NCBI Resource Guide provides more detail about both of those databases.

Step By Step Guide back to top

  • Entrez Genome Project - because microbes fall into the kingdoms of Archaea and Bacteria, retrieve genome project records for organisms that belong to either group

    1. select the Preview/Index option beneath the search box.
At the bottom of the Preview/Index page:
    2. select the Organism field from the pop-up menu and enter archaea in the text box next to the search field menu.
Then press the AND button to add that term and search field to the active query at the top of the page
    3. leaving the field set to Organism enter bacteria in the adjacent text box.
Press the OR button to add that term to the active query.
    4. press Go
    5. use Limits if you would like to restrict your search to sequencing projects with a specific status:
      • Sequencing status: in progress
      • Sequencing status: assembly (draft)
      • Sequencing status: complete
    6. genome projects that meet your search criteria will be displayed in summary format by default. Follow the link for an organism name of interest to display its full genome project record.
    7. To display the complete records of two or more organisms, check the boxes beside the organism names of interest, select the desired display format from the pop-up menu near the top of the search results page, and press the Display button.

  • Alternative approaches - genome projects of some organism groups are also summarized in tabular formats. A tabular summary of completed and in-progress microbial genome sequencing projects is accessible from a number web pages:

    • Entrez Genome Project home page - follow link in right-hand sidebar for Prokaryotic Projects
    • Entrez Genome - follow link in blue sidebar on left side of page for Microbial Genome Projects
    • NCBI Alphabetical Quicklinks Table - follow link for Microbial Genomes
    • NCBI Resource Guide - follow link in alphabetical index for Microbial Genomes to view a list and descriptions of the various resources for that organism group. Then follow the link for "microbial genome sequencing projects" in the "Entrez Genome Project" database description.

Complex Boolean query

The Entrez Genome Project database search shown above can be done in a single step by entering the following Boolean query. For example:

archaea[Organism] OR bacteria[Organism]
