Is there evidence of Horizontal Gene Transfer from eukaryotes to prokaryotes?

The presence of eukaryotic homologs in Escherichia coli K12 has been taken by some researchers as an indication of Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT) from eukaryotes to a prokaryote.

  1. Scroll to Escherichia coli K12 on the list of Microbial Genomes ENTREZ GENOMES and select [T] for TaxTable
  2. Note that there appear to be 9 proteins in Escherichia coli K12 that are homologous to eukaryotic proteins (see FIG 6)
  3. Note also that the TaxPlot for Haemophilus influenzae contains only 2 eukaryotic homologs…
