Sample User Question back to top

Name four genes found at chromosomal location 11q13.1. Display the genes in this location in a tabular format.

Analysis/Comments back to top

Researchers may be interested in identifying the genes in a specific chromosomal region for a number of reasons. These include:
  • They are looking for a control or that they can use for the study of a gene in another location.
  • They may have obtained genetic linkage information for a disease phenotype and are seeking to identify candidate genes.
  • That region of the chromosome may be duplicated or missing in an individual or family under study and the researcher wishes to associate the resulting phenotype with specific gene(s).

  1. MapViewer Search/Browse Page - This allows you to browse by chromosome as well as search for a particular gene by name. Click on the appropriate chromosome to view it. Use the zoom options to focus on the region of interest or use the Region Shown boxes to select it.

  2. MapView of Human Chromosome 11 - Manipulate the mapviewer display to find desired information. Zoom in on the area of interest. Use the 'Maps and Options' link to choose which maps you wish to display. The 'Display as Table View' option is just above the Region Shown boxes on the left sidebar.

Step By Step Guide back to top

  1. On the MapViewer search page, click on chromosome 11.
  2. Zoom in to band location 11q13.1 or type it into the 'region shown' boxes then click on Go.
  3. Display the genes_seq and genes_cyto maps to identify genes in that location.
  4. Click on the "Data as Table" View option to view the genes in tabular form
  5. The output will show you a list of map elements that have been placed on each map currently being shown in the graphic display (so if you want to see the markers/genes on different or more maps, just use the Maps & Options dialog box to select the maps of interest before using the "Data as Table View" option
