  7. Gene locations based on mRNA alignments to genomic contigs

There are a wide variety of human maps available and it takes time and experience to learn to distinguish all of them. For some purposes, more than one map may contain some, or all, of the sought information. The Human Maps Help Page provides a useful summary and should be consulted whenever there is doubt as to which map would be most effective to answer a specific question.

  1. The Variation map (sequence type) displays the locations of SNPs.
  2. The UgHs (Hs_UniG) map (sequence type) displays the locations of human ESTs. Note that you can also add EST maps for several other species.
  3. The STS map (sequence type) or any of several Radiation Hybrid type maps will show the locations of Sequence-Tagged Sites.
  4. The Repeats map (sequence type) will show the location of Alu and LINE repeats.
  5. The Morbid Map (cytogenetic type) and the Phenotype Map (sequence type) show the locations of genes identified in the OMIM database as associated with a disease. Note that the Cytogenetic Map shows the cytogenetic locations while the Phenotype Map shows the location in base pair sequence.
  6. FISH Clone (cytogenetic type) will show the locations of BAC clones; also GenBank map and Clone map (sequence type) may be helpful.
  7. The Genes_Seq (sequence type) shows the mRNA alignments to genomic contigs.
