Sample User Question back to top

What human genes are related to obesity? What obesity genes are on Chromosome 10? What other Chromosome has susceptibility to obesity? What are the metabolic characteristics of obesity? Modes of inheritance are responsible for ____ % of obesity?

Analysis/Comments back to top

Stunkard et al (1986) emphasized that genetic studies should not discourage persons or their physicians from treating obesity but rather that the genetic information should be a guide to the maintenance of a relatively high level of physical activity and appropriate diet. (OMIM record #601665).

Flow Chart back to top

  1. Entrez Gene - provides a single query interface to curated sequence and descriptive information about obesity loci

  2. OR
  3. OMIM - offers background information on the genetics of obesity

Step By Step Guide back to top

Entrez Gene

  • Entrez Gene provides an efficient means to search for genetic and chromosomal markers
  • On the Limits page, under the Limit by Taxomomy header, activate the check box for Homo sapiens to search only for human genes
  • Type the word, obesity in the query box
  • 171 loci (from any human chromosomes) are retrieved
  • to limit retrieval only to loci on chromosome 10, add 10[Chromosome] to your search, so the Boolean representation of the final search would be: obesity[all] AND human[orgn] AND 10[Chromosome]
  • Click on any gene symbol to retrieve further information
OMIM

  • In the OMIM limits click on the Chromosome 10 box
  • Enter obesity in the query box and click on Go
  • *603118 discusses suggestive evidence that a major gene on Chromsome 10 is implicated in the development of obesity
  • *603118 states that epidemiologic studies suggest that 30-70% may be attributable to genetic factors
  • From these same search results, #601665 indicates that major susceptibility to obesity exist on Chromosomes 4, 10 and 20
  • Reduced energy expenditure is discussed in record #601665
