Levels of Service back to top

  • Level 1: Resource Awareness and Data Retrieval

Promote awareness of molecular biology resources by directing users to NCBI resources pertaining to their research area (using NCBI site map as a guide); assist with Entrez searches; direct users to WWW pages with other molecular biology databases and software programs.

  • Level 2: Basic Sequence Similarity Searching

Level 1 plus direct users to BLAST sequence similarity search system and be able to explain or point to descriptions of various BLAST programs, BLAST introduction in CSHL chapter, and BLAST documentation. Also be able to do a demo BLAST search, without necessarily knowing how to interpret the search results.

  • Level 3: Advanced Sequence Similarity Searching and Sequence Analysis

Level 2 plus more technical assistance with BLAST, such as determining which parameters to change, understanding how to interpret results, and assistance with other types of sequence analysis software (e.g., commercial packages, restriction map software, multiple sequence alignments, etc.)

Discussion: Current roles of librarians back to top

  • vary based on experience with databases and needs of clientele

  • research setting
