Human Genome Project back to top

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), is responsible for administering the Human Genome Project and issues various progress reports as well as long range plans.

Human Genome Resources Guide back to top

The Guide provides an overview of available human genome data resources at NCBI and provides centralized access to previously disparate data.

Entrez Map Viewer:  Integrated Maps of Human Chromosomes back to top

The Human Genome Resources Guide includes a link to the Entrez Map Viewer, which allows you to search for genes across the whole genome or on a specific chromosome, and to display detailed maps for chromosomal region of interest.

The Map Viewer includes 19 different maps for the human. Those maps are listed and described in the Homo sapiens genome data and search tips document. A Map Viewer Help Document provides general information on how to use the features of that tool.

Exercises back to top

  • What are some of the genes associated with Alzheimer's disease, and what are their official gene symbols? (hint: start with LocusLink)

  • What resources could be used to find information about genetic variation in humans?

  • What resource is helpful for the general public by providing an introduction to the relationship between genetic factors and human disease?

  • Where can a user download the sequence data currently available for each human chromosome?

  • What is the current sequencing status (percent completion) of each human chromosome?

References back to top

References associated with the various resources are cited on their web pages.
