Fewer Structures than Protein Sequences

  • Most protein sequences in the Entrez Protein database do not yet have a resolved structure
    • As of 11/6/07, there are 18,345,095 protein records and 46,554 structure records
    • (For future reference -- to see the latest statistics yourself, compare the number of records in the Entrez Protein and Entrez Structure databases by using "Preview/Index" to viewing the Index of the "Filter" field for each database. The number shown in parentheses beside the index term "all" is the total number of records in a database.)

  • So the chances of finding a resolved structure for a given protein sequence are low.

  • Therefore, if the traditional methods for searching an Entrez database do not find a structure for your protein of interest, you might need to use some creative "back doors" for retrieving structures that might have some relationship to your protein of interest.
