Ongoing Research and Discoveries
(for your reference after the course)
The NHGRI video we viewed on "How to Sequence a Genome" was made before the working draft of the human genome was completed. We retain it in the course because it so clearly describes the genome sequencing and assembly process. However, since the video was made, research the human genome has continued. You can retrieve information about the current state of knowledge on the human genome by searching resources such as PubMed.
Some of the landmark publications and articles about recent discoveries are cited in the Human Genome module of the NCBI Advanced Workshop for Bioinformatics Information Specialists.
A few additional sample sites are listed below, for your reference after the course, to give an idea of the range of materials and formats available that discuss the state of human genome research:
- National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) home page provides information about current activities and research initiatives, as well as an overview page All About The Human Genome Project (HGP)
- Department of Energy (DOE) Genomics:GTL provides a summary of Human Genome Project (HGP) Information and includes links to information about HGP Progress and a summary of audio/video resources from National Public Radio (NPR) and other sources.
